A Tribute to Van Gogh

With this work, Jordane Saget enters into a dialogue with one of the formative periods in Vincent van Gogh’s career: his time in Nuenen, in the Netherlands, where the artist lived from 1883 to 1885. It was there, in 1885, that Van Gogh painted The Potato Eaters, an iconic work from his early years, devoted to the peasant world and the harsh realities of rural life.
Rather than the scene itself, Jordane Saget draws on its atmosphere and chromatic substance. Van Gogh’s browns and dark earth tones are echoed here in a palette of deep greens, blacks, ochres and yellows, animated by the continuous movement of Saget’s signature lines.
Van Gogh’s figurative composition gives way to a dense, organic network. The lines intertwine, fold back on themselves and extend like roots, furrows or plant forms, bringing to the surface the connection to the earth that lay at the heart of Van Gogh’s Nuenen period.
With The Potato Eaters, Jordane Saget does not reproduce Van Gogh: he draws on its memory and allows it to flow through his own visual language. A tribute in which earth, colour and gesture connect two pictorial languages separated by nearly a century and a half.
