Contact usWith Sponge Totem, Louis Bottero brings into tension two pictorial dynamics: a vibrant, almost atmospheric background, and a frontal structure drawn in a bold, thick, and assertive
black gesture. Across a surface where colors blend and overlap—from green to blue, then into incandescent reds and luminous yellows—the artist composes a chromatic landscape
in constant transformation, punctuated by drips that emphasize the materiality of the paint.
In the foreground, a totemic face emerges, constructed from a network of continuous, almost calligraphic lines. The eyes, asymmetrical and expressive, establish an immediate presence,
while the overall linework evokes at once a mask, an archaic figure, and a contemporary sign. This layering of gestural abstraction and stylized figuration creates a fertile tension
between control and spontaneity.
The title, Sponge Totem, suggests a porous, absorbent form—a figure capable of encompassing and retaining the layers of color that pass through it. The totem thus becomes a point
of condensation: an entity both primitive and current, capturing the energy of the background and transforming it into presence.
Through its striking contrast between structure and fluidity, the work asserts a direct, almost ritualistic visual power, where the viewer is engaged as much by the intensity of
the gesture as by the vibrant depth of color.
